It is a condition where people have trouble falling asleep – or staying asleep. Insomnia affects both adults and children. It can be a temporary, short-term condition (lasting days or weeks) or a chronic condition. Insomnia is common among shift workers, those under stress, and adults 65+.
The lack of sleep can affect our ability to learn, focus or concentrate. It is also a leading cause of automobile accidents. Insomnia can be the direct cause, or can result from other issues: such as mental stress, chronic pain, heartburn, menopause, drugs or medications, stimulants (eg. caffeine or nicotine), alcohol, heart failure and more. It can also be caused by other sleep disorders such as sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome.
